Karun Nair, once a rising star in Indian cricket, is making headlines again with his remarkable comeback story. Back in December 2022, he posted an emotional plea on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Dear cricket, give me one more chance.” At that time, his career seemed to be nearing an unfortunate end, but over the last year, he has turned his fortunes around. Reports suggest that he is now back in contention for a spot in the national team.

Nair’s journey has always been unique. He made history with a sensational 303* against England in Chennai, becoming only the second Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket. Despite this monumental achievement, he struggled to cement his place in the team for the longest format. Now, with stellar performances in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, he has reignited hope for a return to the Indian side.

In the tournament, Nair has been in extraordinary form, scoring 112*, 44*, 163*, 111*, 112*, and 122* in six innings. Remarkably, he has remained unbeaten throughout the campaign, amassing over 600 runs with a jaw-dropping average of 664. His performances have broken records, making him the leading scorer in List A cricket without being dismissed in a single edition. He has also joined an elite group of players, becoming the second batter after Narayan Jagadeesan to score five centuries in one season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Additionally, Nair is among just three players to achieve four consecutive centuries in List A cricket, underlining his consistency and dominance.

Reflecting on his journey, Nair revealed how challenging the past year had been. Speaking to the Indian Express, he recalled the emotions behind his 2022 tweet. For six or seven months, he was away from competitive cricket, traveling three hours daily just to practice at the nets. “I wasn’t considered for any format, and it was tough. Moving on wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to rebuild myself, both mentally and physically,” he said. Determined to seize any opportunity that came his way, Nair worked relentlessly on his game to eliminate any reason for selectors to overlook him. “I needed to be consistent and score runs, so I just focused on improving myself,” he added.

Reports indicate that the national selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are now closely monitoring his performances. With India preparing for a transitional phase in Test cricket as senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli approach the end of their careers, Nair has emerged as a strong contender for the longest format. His performances have made him hard to ignore at a time when the team is searching for dependable middle-order options.

Nair’s journey hasn’t been without struggles. Not long ago, he faced difficulties finding a team to play for. It was then that Abey Kuruvilla, a former India player and current BCCI General Manager, stepped in to help. Nair shared how he reached out to Kuruvilla and asked for an opportunity. “He was my selector during my U-19 days, and I felt comfortable approaching him. That’s how I moved to Vidarbha, and I’m thankful to him and the Vidarbha Association for giving me a chance,” Nair said.

Now, with his consistent performances and record-breaking feats, Nair is focused on his ultimate dream of representing India again in Test cricket. “Everyone dreams of playing for their country, and I’m no different. I want to play Test matches again, and I know I have to keep doing my job consistently to achieve that,” he concluded. His journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of second chances, inspiring many to believe that comebacks are possible with determination and effort.
