Kohli, Sharma's struggles prompt BCCI to boost India's coaching staff: Report

The BCCI is reportedly thinking about adding a new member to the men’s cricket team’s coaching staff, specifically a dedicated batting coach. Although there hasn’t been any official confirmation yet, reports from Cricbuzz suggest that discussions within the board and team management point to the need for strengthening the support staff. This step is being considered after India’s recent disappointing Test series defeats to Australia (away) and New Zealand (home).

The BCCI is said to be exploring multiple options for the role of a batting coach. A few names, including former domestic cricket players with strong reputations, are reportedly under consideration. However, no final decision has been made yet.

India’s recent performances in Tests have been underwhelming. The team suffered a 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia earlier this month. This result was especially frustrating since India had started the series with a win in Perth. Additionally, rumors of tension between head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma during the Australian tour have added to the team’s struggles on the field.

The current support staff for Team India includes Morne Morkel as the bowling coach, Abhishek Nayar, and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches, T Dilip as the fielding coach, and Gautam Gambhir as the head coach. However, the team’s batting performances, particularly those of star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have come under criticism. Both players have struggled with similar types of dismissals, with Kohli’s issues being particularly concerning. This has raised questions about the effectiveness of the current coaching methods.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of India’s most dependable batsmen, have faced difficulties in recent matches. Their struggles have not only put pressure on the team but also highlighted the need for specialized support to address these issues. This matter was reportedly discussed during a review meeting held in Mumbai on January 11. Although the exact details of the meeting are unclear, there are strong indications that the addition of a batting coach was suggested as a potential solution.

The BCCI is reportedly paying close attention to India’s overall batting performance in Test cricket, as the team has struggled to maintain consistency in recent series.

Team India will be back in action later this month with a series against England. The schedule includes five T20Is and three ODIs. With the Champions Trophy set to take place in February-March, India’s focus will remain on the fifty-over format for the next few months.

By bringing in a dedicated batting coach, the BCCI hopes to address the team’s struggles and improve performance, especially with key tournaments on the horizon.
