Kerala Woman Who Poisoned Boyfriend's Drink Sentenced to Death

A 24-year-old woman from Kerala has been sentenced to death for killing her boyfriend in a cold-blooded manner. This verdict was given on Monday, two years after the tragic incident. The woman, named Greeshma, poisoned her 23-year-old boyfriend, Sharon Raj because she wanted to end their romantic relationship.

Greeshma and her uncle were convicted of the murder by a local court last week. The court decided that her age should not be considered when determining the punishment for such a serious crime. Greeshma had requested a lighter sentence, arguing that she had done well in her studies, had no prior criminal record, and was the only daughter of her parents. However, the prosecution presented strong evidence, including digital and scientific proof, to show that Greeshma was guilty of the crime. Greeshma is now the youngest woman in Kerala to be sentenced to death.

After the verdict was announced, the lawyer representing the victim’s family expressed confidence that the evidence presented in the case would be accepted by the court. Special Public Prosecutor VS Vineeth Kumar spoke to the media outside the court, saying that he had been sure the evidence would lead to the conviction, and he felt the sentence was deserved, calling it an "exemplary judgment."

In 2022, Greeshma had poisoned Sharon with an ayurvedic tonic laced with paraquat, a dangerous herbicide. Sharon died after 11 days due to multiple organ failure. Greeshma had planned the murder because Sharon refused to end their relationship, even though her parents had arranged for her to marry an army man from Tamil Nadu.

Before successfully poisoning Sharon, Greeshma had tried to poison him earlier by mixing paracetamol tablets into fruit juice. However, he refused to drink it because of the bitter taste, and her plan failed.

Sharon Raj, who was from Parassala in the Thiruvananthapuram district, was studying Radiology at college. Greeshma was found guilty of murder under the Indian Penal Code, while her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, was convicted of destroying evidence. Greeshma’s mother, who had also been taken into custody, was released because there was not enough evidence against her.
