Kerala Govt to Declare Missing Wayanad Landslide Victims as Dead

The Kerala government has made an important decision to declare as "dead" the individuals who went missing in the devastating Wayanad landslide last year. This move is intended to provide relief and financial compensation to the grieving families who have been awaiting closure.

To ensure a thorough and transparent process, the government has issued an order outlining a detailed procedure for verifying the status of the missing persons. Committees will be formed at three levels—local, district, and state—comprising officials from the revenue department and other key agencies. At the local level, the committee will include the panchayat secretary, village officer, and station house officer from the respective police stations.

This team will prepare a list of missing individuals, which will then be submitted to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) for review. The DDMA will carefully scrutinize the list and forward it, along with its recommendations, to a state-level committee. This final committee, consisting of senior officials such as the additional chief secretary (home) and principal secretaries of revenue and local self-government departments, will verify the information and submit it to the government for final approval.

Once the government receives the verified list, an order will be issued to declare the missing individuals as deceased. This declaration will enable their families to receive financial compensation, bringing them some relief after enduring the trauma of the disaster.

According to official records, the landslide that struck Wayanad on July 30 last year resulted in the deaths of 263 people, with 35 individuals still reported as missing. As part of the verification process, local committees have been instructed to examine FIRs related to missing persons filed at the respective police stations. A detailed inquiry will also be conducted by the tahsildar or sub-divisional magistrate to confirm the status of the missing individuals. The findings of this investigation will be published on the government’s official website and in the Gazette.

To maintain fairness, the government has provided a 30-day period during which objections can be filed regarding the findings. Once this period is over, the final list of missing individuals will be published, and death certificates will be issued to their immediate relatives. This process aims to ensure transparency and provide a sense of closure to the families while addressing the financial and emotional challenges they have faced since the tragedy.
