Trouble seems to be building for Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balakrishna after a Kerala court issued a bailable warrant against them in a case involving a misleading advertisement.
The issue started when a drug inspector in Palakkad filed a complaint against the two for an advertisement published by Divya Pharmacy, which is connected to Patanjali Ayurved. The complaint led to the Judicial First Class Magistrate II issuing the warrant.
Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna are facing serious allegations. The charges are related to ads that were published by Divya Pharmacy, and both of them have been accused under section 3(d) and section 7(a) of the Drug and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act, 1954.
This isn't the first time Patanjali and its founders have been under scrutiny for their advertisements. Over the past couple of years, many people have raised concerns about the misleading claims made by Patanjali. These claims were about the effectiveness of their products in curing diseases, without any scientific evidence to back them up. This issue eventually caught the attention of the Supreme Court, after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) filed a petition against Patanjali's misleading ads. As a result, the Supreme Court took action by issuing a contempt of court notice to Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna and temporarily banned the advertisements of their medicines.
The Supreme Court also stated that Patanjali had misled the public with false claims. Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna later apologized in front of the court for the misleading advertisements. They were ordered to issue public apologies in newspapers as well.
The case took another turn recently. According to an order from the magisterial court, dated January 16, both Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna were absent from the hearing, so the court issued a bailable warrant against them. The next hearing is scheduled for February 1, according to the case details on the Palakkad District Court's website.
Besides this, several other criminal cases are ongoing in Kerala against Divya Pharmacy for publishing similar misleading advertisements. These ads allegedly criticized modern medicine and made unfounded claims about curing diseases. The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kozhikode is handling one of these cases.
This case is just another chapter in the ongoing controversy surrounding Patanjali's advertisements. With the next court date coming up, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds for Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna.
