Arvind Kejriwal, the National Convenor of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), recently responded to the BJP's criticism of his comments about the Ramayana and Ravana. On Tuesday, he said, “They love Ravana so much,” after facing backlash from the BJP for his remarks.
Kejriwal had spoken about the Ramayana in a speech, mentioning the incident when Ravana, disguised as a golden deer, tricked Goddess Sita. He compared this to the BJP’s actions. Kejriwal said, “Yesterday I said that Ravana came as a golden deer, and Mother Sita wanted that deer. They are saying it wasn’t Ravana but Marichi (a demon) who came as the deer. The entire BJP is protesting outside my house, asking why I insulted Ravana. They love Ravana so much. They have a demonic nature.”
Kejriwal also issued a warning to the slum dwellers and poor people of Delhi, saying, “These people will gulp you down like demons if they come to power.” His comments seemed to target the BJP, cautioning people about the party’s intentions.
In his speech on Monday, Kejriwal had recited a part of the Ramayana during a visit to Vishwas Nagar. He spoke about the moment when Ravana, disguised as a golden deer, tricked Sita into asking her husband, Lord Ram, to chase it. This led to Sita’s abduction. Kejriwal used this story to warn people, saying, "Don’t get caught in their trap. The BJP is like the golden deer in the Ramayana. Don’t fall for their tricks.”
He added, “These people (from BJP) stay in slums, but they don’t love you. They love your votes. After the elections, they will take your land away.” Kejriwal’s message was clear: the BJP is not there for the welfare of the poor but to take advantage of them for votes.
The BJP, however, wasn’t pleased with Kejriwal’s comparison. Pradeep Bhandari, a BJP spokesperson, accused Kejriwal of misquoting the Ramayana. He said, "Arvind Kejriwal is a ‘Chunavi Hindu’ (a Hindu during elections). Appeasement runs in his and Rahul Gandhi’s veins.” Bhandari also criticized Kejriwal for allegedly having little knowledge of the Ramayana and said, “He can’t even recite it properly.”
The BJP also accused Kejriwal of playing politics for votes by pretending to care about Hindu issues during election time. Virendra Sachdeva, Delhi’s BJP President, took a strong stand against Kejriwal, calling his statements disrespectful to Sanatan Dharma. He said, "Kejriwal is insulting Sanatan Dharma and misinterpreting the Ramcharitmanas.” Sachdeva questioned Kejriwal’s sudden interest in temples, claiming that he only remembers them during elections.
Earlier, Kejriwal had made controversial comments about the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, saying that his grandmother used to believe that the temple should not be built. Sachdeva pointed out this contradiction, stating that Kejriwal used to oppose the temple but now, with elections approaching, he suddenly supports it.
The battle between Kejriwal and the BJP is heating up as the Delhi Assembly elections approach. Voting will take place on February 5, and the results will be counted on February 8. The political tension is expected to grow even more intense in the coming days, with both parties gearing up for a fierce contest.
