How does a player with over 700 runs in a recent tournament not get selected for the national team? This question has been on the minds of many cricket fans after Karun Nair, the Vidarbha batter, was left out of India’s Champions Trophy squad, even after a spectacular performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Nair scored runs effortlessly in the tournament, and his fans were hoping to see him in the national team. But when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, Nair’s name was nowhere to be found. This led to some tough questions for Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, during the press conference.
Despite not cutting, Nair isn’t giving up hope. He finished the Vijay Hazare Trophy with just one dismissal in the final match against Karnataka, where he scored 779 runs. His impressive average of 389.50 was built from 8 unbeaten innings out of 9. This outstanding performance made him one of the best players in the tournament.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Nair shared that he still dreams of playing for the Indian team. He said, "Obviously, the possibility of an India comeback has to be on your mind. If you want to play for the country, you have to keep dreaming. There are these thoughts and dreams in the head, but that's just motivation."
Ajit Agarkar, when asked about Nair's omission, acknowledged the batter’s incredible performance. He said, "It’s crazy to see someone score over 700 runs, but unfortunately, he doesn’t fit into the 15-man squad at this point." Agarkar also mentioned that while it’s hard to leave out such talented players, it’s tough to find a place for everyone in the squad. He pointed out that the players selected in the squad are all performing well and have an average above 40. He also added that, if any player goes out of form or gets injured, Nair’s performances would make him a strong candidate for a future spot.
So, even though Nair wasn’t chosen this time, his remarkable run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy hasn’t gone unnoticed. The door is still open for him to make a comeback in the future, and he continues to dream of representing India one day.
