JDU Withdraws Support to BJP-Led Government in Manipur, Says Nitish Kumar

In a recent political development, the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) has announced its decision to withdraw support from the N Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur. This means the party’s lone MLA in the Manipur Assembly will now sit in the Opposition. Although this move does not affect the BJP government’s stability, it carries significant political weight because JDU is a key ally of the BJP at the central level and in Bihar. The announcement comes not long after the Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party, which governs Meghalaya, also withdrew support from the Manipur government.

During the 2022 Assembly elections in Manipur, the JDU secured six seats. However, shortly after the elections, five of its MLAs defected to the BJP, further strengthening the ruling party’s numbers. As it stands, the BJP now has 37 legislators in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. It is also supported by five MLAs from the Naga People's Front and three Independent MLAs, giving it a clear majority.

Ksh Biren Singh, who leads the JDU unit in Manipur, officially informed Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla about this decision. In a letter, he explained that the party had decided to withdraw its support from the BJP-led government. He noted that the Speaker had already assigned the lone JDU MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir, a seat in the Opposition during the last Assembly session.

The letter highlighted that after the 2022 Assembly elections, where JDU won six seats, five of its MLAs defected to the BJP. A case regarding their defection is currently being heard under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution by the Speaker’s Tribunal. Ksh Biren Singh further mentioned that after JDU joined the INDIA bloc, the party officially withdrew its support from the BJP government in Manipur.

The letter reiterated that the lone JDU MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir will remain an Opposition member in the Assembly. It also clarified that JDU no longer supports the BJP-led government in Manipur.

Nitish Kumar’s JDU played a significant role in the BJP’s success in this year’s general elections, where the party secured 12 seats. The alliance between JDU and BJP is particularly crucial in Bihar, where the two parties govern together, and Assembly elections are approaching. Nitish Kumar, known for switching alliances over the years, rejoined the BJP-led NDA last year after being an important part of the INDIA Opposition bloc.

This political move raises questions about the dynamics between the BJP and its allies, especially as the country gears up for more elections shortly.
