ISRO Shares Space Images of Maha Kumbh Mela from Above

India's space agency, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), has captured images of the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela using Indian satellites. This event, which is the world's largest religious gathering, is taking place at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.

The images, taken by ISRO, show the huge infrastructure that has been set up for the fair, where about 40 crore people are expected to visit over 45 days. The National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) in Hyderabad used India's advanced optical satellites and radar technology to capture the images. These satellites can see through clouds, which helped the scientists get clear images of the area, even with the clouds that were covering Prayagraj.

Pallava Bagla, Science Editor at NDTV, viewed these images and shared how the temporary tent city and hundreds of pontoon bridges were being built to support the crowd. Dr. Prakash Chauhan, the Director of NRSC, explained that they used the radar system because it could capture clear images even through the thick cloud cover.

The satellite images, taken at different times (September 15, 2023, and December 29, 2024), show the progress of the construction. These images give unique details about the layout of the tent city, including the roads and the network of pontoon bridges. The images are also helpful for the local authorities to prevent disasters or stampedes during the Mela.

Time-lapse images from space show how the Prayagraj Parade Ground changed from September 2023 to December 2024. The images also show how the site looked as the crowd began to gather in January 2025. The authorities can use these images to manage the crowd and the resources effectively.

One interesting feature captured by the satellites is the creation of Shivalay Park. The images show that on April 6, 2024, the area was just a clear field, but by December 22, 2024, the park was complete, shaped in the map of India. It is fascinating to see how such large-scale projects are developed over time, especially from space.

A new area called Mahakumbh Nagar has been set up for the event. This year, the Mela is being held at Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers meet. The Mela is scheduled to run from January 13 to February 26, 2025.

For the event, about 1,50,000 tents have been set up to accommodate visitors. There are also 3,000 kitchens, 1,45,000 restrooms, and 99 parking lots for the convenience of the crowd.

Maha Kumbh Mela is held four times in 12 years, rotating between four sacred sites in India: Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), Nashik (Maharashtra), and Prayagraj. Millions of pilgrims come to take part in this event, where they bathe in the rivers, a ritual called Amrit Snan. People believe that bathing in these holy rivers helps cleanse their souls and wash away their sins.

This year, a lot of work has gone into creating space for the gathering. Nearly 26 hectares of land have been reclaimed, and about 12 kilometers of new bathing ghats have been made for the Mela. So far, over eight crore people have taken a dip in the sacred rivers.

The use of advanced technology, like satellites, is helping manage this massive religious gathering in a much more organized and efficient way. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, stated that this combination of technology and tradition makes the Mela a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
