Ira Khan, the daughter of famous actor Aamir Khan and his first wife Reena Datta, has always been open about her struggles with mental health. She has frequently spoken about the importance of mental health and how therapy has helped her in dealing with emotional challenges.
Recently, in a conversation with actor Ahsaas Channa, Ira opened up about how therapy played a big role in improving her relationship with her parents. She shared how therapy helped her understand the complexities of parent-child relationships. Ira highlighted that it’s important to realize when your child has grown up and is no longer just a "baby." According to her, the idea that relationships need work, even with parents, is something that isn’t usually talked about, but it’s essential.
During her battle with depression, Ira learned many things that she wished she had been taught earlier. She said, "For a few years, you hear that marriage is a compromise, and you have to work on it. But that's the same with your parents. In any relationship, you have to put in effort. Nobody tells you that you have to build a relationship with your parents."
She also spoke about how difficult it was to see her parents as people, rather than just as parents. "When you’re a child, you eventually grow up and are supposed to see your parents as individuals, not just as your parents. But that shift never happens," she explained. She added that this is why parents are often not allowed to make mistakes, which is an unfair expectation. She admitted that it makes things complicated and that parents tend to continue treating their children as if they were younger, even though the child has matured.
Ira emphasized that it’s crucial to see parents as individuals who have their own lives, beyond just their role as parents. She shared a personal story, recalling how her therapist once asked her, "So, what are your parents like?" Ira realized that she didn’t know her parents as people, only as parents. This made her wonder how she could have a real relationship with someone if she didn’t understand or like them as individuals. Ira found it strange but interesting to start getting to know her parents as people.
Aamir Khan and Reena Datta, Ira’s parents, separated in 2022. In a video shared by Netflix India earlier, Aamir Khan also revealed that he and Ira had taken joint therapy sessions together. Ira has often said that therapy was one of the best decisions she ever made. It helped her build a healthier and stronger relationship with her parents and allowed her to see them not just as her parents, but as strong individuals in their own right.
