IPL 2025 to Begin on March 21 in Kolkata

The schedule for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been slightly changed. Originally, the tournament was planned to begin earlier in March, but it will now start a week later. According to Cricbuzz, IPL 2025 will kick off on March 21 in Kolkata, and the final is expected to take place on May 25 at the same stadium.

There are two main reasons behind this change in schedule. Initially, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had told the franchises about the tournament dates in a letter sent on November 22. The letter stated that the IPL would be held from March 14 to May 25, 2025. The BCCI had also shared the dates for the next two IPL seasons.

However, it now appears that those dates were just placeholders for the IPL window and not the exact schedule. Another version of the story suggests that the change happened because broadcasters asked for a later start. The broadcasters wanted the tournament to start after the Champions Trophy final, which is scheduled for March 9, just five days before the original IPL start date. However, sources from the broadcasting networks have denied making such a request.

The venues for the important matches are expected to follow the usual pattern. Eden Gardens, the home of the Kolkata Knight Riders and the champions of IPL 2024 will host both the season opener and the final. This follows the tradition of holding these key matches in the home city of the previous season’s winning team. Additionally, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were the runners-up in the last season, will host two of the playoff games.

The full schedule for IPL 2025 will be released soon, as the BCCI has now elected new officials. Devjit Saikia has been named the full-term secretary, and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia is the new treasurer. Both were elected during a Special General Meeting held in Mumbai on January 12.

In other news, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla shared that the Champions Trophy squad will be announced on January 17 or 18. He also mentioned that the venues for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) have been finalized and will be announced soon.
