A committee set up by the Indian government has recommended legal action against a former intelligence officer, identified as 'CC-1' in a case filed in New York City. The officer is accused of organizing a failed plot to assassinate Gurupatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani terrorist who holds dual US-Canadian citizenship.
The committee was created to investigate the officer's connections with criminal gangs and the drug mafia. There were claims that the officer had been involved in planning the assassination of Pannun in the US in 2023.
After a detailed investigation, the committee submitted its findings to the government and suggested taking legal action against the individual, whose past criminal activities also came to light during the inquiry. The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed this in a statement.
It was later revealed that 'CC-1' was Vikash Yadav, a former officer with India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). The government stated that Yadav no longer worked for them.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said the committee's report emphasized that the legal action against Yadav should be completed quickly.
The committee conducted its investigation and also worked closely with US authorities. Both sides shared information, visited each other, and examined documents. The committee interviewed many officials from different agencies to understand the situation better.
Additionally, the committee suggested improvements in how India handles such cases. They recommended better coordination and stronger systems to respond to issues like this in the future.
In the US, the Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York charged Vikash Yadav with "murder-for-hire and money laundering" for his attempt to have Pannun killed. The FBI also accused Indian agents of being involved in the plot. FBI Director Christopher Wray had made it clear that the FBI would not tolerate any violence or retaliation against people in the US for exercising their rights.
Yadav is said to have recruited Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, in May 2023 to carry out the assassination. Gupta traveled from India to Prague, where he was arrested in June 2023. He was then extradited to the US, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Yadav and Gupta are accused of hiring someone to kill Pannun for $100,000. However, the FBI later found out that the person they hired was an informant working undercover for the agency.
This case highlights serious concerns about violence, criminal connections, and international cooperation in handling such issues.
