India is about to take a major step in ocean exploration with the launch of its first human-operated underwater submersible, as part of the Deep Ocean Mission. Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh shared the exciting news on Thursday, announcing that the submersible, capable of diving 500 meters deep, will begin its operations this year. This mission is set to explore the vast and largely unexplored depths of the ocean, to find valuable resources that could be crucial for India’s future, both economically and environmentally.
Singh explained that this mission is not just about exploring the ocean but also aligns with India’s larger scientific ambitions. He compared the mission to the Gaganyaan space program, emphasizing that it reflects India’s growing capabilities in advanced technologies.
The Deep Ocean Mission has the potential to discover rare minerals, metals, and marine life that could boost India’s “blue economy” — the use of ocean resources for economic growth. This is important for India’s long-term economic development and sustainability.
Looking ahead, Singh mentioned that the mission plans to reach a depth of 6,000 meters by next year, which would be a huge leap in ocean exploration. What makes this mission even more special is that it uses technology created entirely in India. This highlights the country’s progress in becoming more self-reliant in advanced science and technology.
Apart from exploring resources, the mission will also help scientists understand deep-sea ecosystems better, which could lead to more sustainable fisheries and better protection of marine biodiversity. Singh believes that exploring the ocean’s treasures will not only benefit India’s economy but also contribute to scientific knowledge and environmental protection. This mission marks a big step for India, positioning the country as a leader in marine science and technology.
