Heavy Snowfall in Sikkim: Impact on Travel Plans and Road Connectivity

Official: Snowfall at an intensity never experienced before hits the upper reaches of Sikkim, which was already reeling from disruptions due to heavy snowfall. This, on Tuesday evening, dropped the temperature substantially across the Himalayan state.

As a consequence, black ice has developed along the Nathula and Tsomgo Lake roads, which does not allow vehicular movement safely. The roads are particularly slippery and hazardous for movement. Efforts are being put into clearing snow, but the official said that it may take another day or two to get the routes in shape again.

Such situations have made the Tourism department withhold permits for visitation to Nathula and Tsomgo Lake. The officials are asking people to keep up with the developments and to take precautions if planning to visit.

The local administration is closely monitoring the weather and the road conditions. Later, it will update everyone about the situation. For now, travelers are advised to reconsider their plans and follow up on the clearing operations progress.
