Global HMPV Tracker: Mumbai Infant Tests Positive, States Urged to Stay Cautious

Photo : AFP

HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is a respiratory virus that can infect people of all ages, especially during the winter and early spring seasons. This virus can cause mild infections, but in some cases, it can lead to more serious issues like cough, chest tightness, and low oxygen levels. Most people recover from it on their own.

A six-month-old girl in Mumbai has become the latest case of HMPV in India. She is the eighth case in the country and the third in Maharashtra. The infant was admitted to the hospital on January 1 with a severe cough, chest tightness, and oxygen levels that dropped to 84%. After five days of treatment, she was discharged. Previously, two cases were reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra, involving a 7-year-old and a 13-year-old. Other cases have been found in Karnataka (2), Gujarat (1), and Tamil Nadu (2).

Several states, including Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Bihar, have urged people not to panic. In Mizoram, a committee has been set up to monitor the spread of HMPV. Isolation wards have been established in three civil hospitals in Gujarat—Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot. The Indian government has advised states to keep a close watch on respiratory illnesses like Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). They have also encouraged awareness campaigns on how to prevent the spread of HMPV.

HMPV is a known respiratory virus around the world. It is often mild and goes away on its own, but it can cause problems, especially in younger children and older adults. According to Soumya Swaminathan, a former chief scientist at the World Health Organization, there is no connection between HMPV and COVID-19. She also mentioned that the current number of cases being tracked isn’t a cause for major concern. However, she recommended wearing a mask as a precaution.
