France has firmly stated that the European Union will not allow any nation to attack its "sovereign borders." This statement came after US President-Elect Donald Trump hinted he might use military force to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
On Tuesday, Trump once again expressed his interest in acquiring Greenland. He described the island as "critical" for national and economic security during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, less than two weeks before his second term begins. When asked if he would rule out military or economic action to take Greenland or the Panama Canal, Trump responded, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security.”
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot responded sharply, telling French radio that the EU would not tolerate intimidation or threats to its borders. He said, “There is no question that the European Union would let other nations attack its sovereign borders, whoever they are.” While Barrot dismissed the likelihood of a US invasion of Greenland, he warned of a return to "survival of the fittest" in international relations. “We must wake up, build our strength, and not let ourselves be intimidated,” he added.
Greenland’s Stance
Greenland's prime minister, Mute Egede, is currently in Copenhagen, pushing for greater independence. Egede has made it clear that Greenland is not for sale, echoing Denmark’s long-standing position on the matter. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders” and emphasized that only its local population could decide its future.
Strategic Importance of Greenland
Greenland, the world’s largest island with a small population of just 57,000, has been strategically important to the US for decades. It houses a US radar base built during the Cold War, which remains critical for tracking Chinese and Russian activities in the Arctic region. The island also boasts vast deposits of rare earth minerals essential for manufacturing batteries and high-tech devices, adding to its economic value.
Trump argued that Greenland plays a vital role in military strategy, claiming it is essential for protecting the free world from threats by nations like China and Russia.
Local Reaction
Most Greenlanders were reportedly shocked by Trump’s comments about using force to take the island. Danish Broadcasting Corporation correspondent Steffen Kretz, reporting from Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, said locals acknowledge the island’s economic dependence on Denmark. While many Greenlanders hope for independence someday, they see Denmark as a reliable partner that provides essential services, defense, and financial support.
“I haven’t met anyone in Greenland dreaming of becoming a colony of another power like the US,” Kretz said.
A Growing Diplomatic Rift
Denmark has sought to downplay any conflict with Trump, but officials privately acknowledge the issue could become the most significant international crisis Denmark has faced in modern history.
Adding a curious twist, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., made a brief trip to Greenland on Tuesday, calling it a "personal day trip." He posted photos of himself in a local bar, wearing a pro-Trump cap alongside Greenlanders, further stirring reactions.
As tensions simmer, the situation highlights Greenland's growing geopolitical importance and the need for careful diplomacy between the US, Denmark, and the EU.
