Blood pressure is a key measure of your heart’s health, but what does it really mean to have “healthy” blood pressure? Simply put, blood pressure refers to the force with which your blood pushes against the walls of your blood vessels as it flows through your body. This force is vital to ensure your body gets the oxygen and nutrients it needs. However, having either too high or too low blood pressure can cause serious health issues.
In this post, we will explain what blood pressure is, what healthy blood pressure levels should look like, and how to keep them healthy for improved overall health.
There are two numbers that are used to measure blood pressure: systolic and diastolic. The top number measures the force when your heart beats and pumps blood, while the bottom number measures the force when your heart is at rest between beats. These two numbers are recorded in millimeters of mercury (mmHg), and both are important in understanding how well your heart is functioning.
An example of normal blood pressure is reading 120/80 mmHg. In other words, 120 is the systolic pressure and 80 the diastolic pressure.
The American Heart Association (AHA) has set the following guidelines for blood pressure levels:
Normal: Below 120/80 mmHg
Elevated: Systolic between 120-129 and diastolic below 80 mmHg
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Stage 1: Systolic between 130-139 or diastolic between 80-89 mmHg
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Stage 2: Systolic 140 or higher or diastolic 90 or higher
Hypertensive Crisis: Systolic over 180 and/or diastolic over 120 (seek immediate medical help)
It's important to regularly monitor your blood pressure to ensure it stays within a healthy range. If you notice a significant change or if it falls into the elevated or high blood pressure categories, it’s time to take action to bring it back to normal levels.
Maintaining healthy blood pressure is crucial because when it’s too high (hypertension), it can strain your heart and arteries, leading to a higher risk of serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and vision loss. On the other hand, low blood pressure (hypotension) can also cause dizziness, fainting, and shock, especially if it drops suddenly.
By keeping your blood pressure in check, you are helping to protect your heart, kidneys, and overall health. So, what can you do to maintain healthy blood pressure?
A healthy diet is one of the best ways to control your blood pressure. Be sure to eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and lean proteins. Reducing the intake of processed foods and added sugars and unhealthy fats also can lower blood pressure. A diet that is high in potassium but low in sodium helps the heart. Some of the good sources of potassium are bananas, potatoes, leafy greens, and beans.
Physical activity is another important factor in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Regular exercise, such as walking, swimming, or cycling, can help lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Not only does exercise help your heart stay strong, but it also promotes better circulation and overall well-being.
Chronic stress is one of the factors that can elevate blood pressure over time. Finding healthy ways to manage stress, such as through relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga, can help keep your blood pressure levels under control. Even simple practices like spending time with loved ones, taking breaks, or enjoying a hobby can make a big difference in reducing stress.
Drinking too much alcohol can increase blood pressure, so it is very important to take it in moderation. For men, this should not exceed two drinks a day, and for women, it is not more than one. Caffeine can also cause a temporary increase in blood pressure. Limiting the intake of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, energy drinks, and soda will help avoid unwarranted increases in blood pressure.
Being overweight or obese can put extra strain on your heart and blood vessels, which can increase your risk of high blood pressure. Losing even a small amount of weight can have a significant impact on lowering blood pressure. Aim for a healthy body mass index (BMI) by combining a balanced diet with regular physical activity.
Smoking is one of the worst, most harmful habits you can have on your heart, because the chemicals in tobacco damage your blood vessels and increase your rate of heartbeat, both of which cause your blood pressure to rise. The decision to quit smoking may be one of the better ones you ever made for your health.
Poor sleep quality can contribute to high blood pressure. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, avoid caffeine or heavy meals before bedtime, and create a relaxing sleep environment to promote better rest.
Monitor Your Blood Pressure Regularly
A very simple way of keeping track of your health is by checking your blood pressure. You can even get an at-home blood pressure monitor to check your levels between doctor visits. If you do notice any concerning changes, then contact your healthcare provider right away.
