A government official in Uttarakhand was arrested this week after he ran over three minor girls while driving drunk. The accident, which took place in Nainital district on Monday, resulted in one girl’s death and left the other two seriously injured.
The official, Bhupendra Singh, is the Assistant Block Development Officer (BDO) of Kotabagh. He tried to escape after hitting the girls but was caught by the police. A medical test confirmed that Singh was drunk at the time of the accident.
The victims—two sisters, aged 14 and 17, and their 15-year-old friend—had been on their way home from the Uttarayani fair on Monday evening when they were struck by the speeding car. They were from Nathunagar village in Kotabagh. The girls were immediately taken to the hospital. Sadly, 14-year-old Mahi Bora was declared dead by doctors. Her older sister Kanak Bora, aged 17, and their friend Mamta Bhandari, aged 15, are in serious condition and remain hospitalized.
Kotabagh police officials said that Singh tried to flee after hitting the girls. However, just a few meters away, he crashed his car into a hill and was unable to get out. The police caught him there and took him into custody.
The injured girls were first taken to the Community Health Centre in Kotabagh and then moved to a bigger hospital. Mahi Bora was declared dead, and the two survivors are now being treated at Sai Hospital in Haldwani.
Authorities said that a formal complaint from the victim’s families is required to file a case. The police added that the case would be registered after the girls’ cremation. Singh, the government official, will remain in custody until that time.
