Diljit Dosanjh's Punjab 95 movie release postponed due to unforeseen circumstances

Diljit Dosanjh's upcoming film Punjab 95, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, has faced a delay in its release. Originally set to release on February 7, the film will not be hitting theaters as planned. Diljit made this announcement on his Instagram, explaining that the movie's release had been postponed due to "circumstances beyond our control."

In his Instagram stories, Diljit shared his disappointment with fans, saying, “We are very sorry and it pains us to inform you that the movie Punjab 95 will not release on 7th February.” He also posted a heartfelt photo of Khalra with a quote that read: “I pray to the Guru, who identifies with truth, to keep this light lit,” which reflects the spirit of the film.

Punjab 95 has been delayed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has suggested over 120 cuts to the movie. The film, which deals with a sensitive and significant subject, was supposed to be released without any changes, as Diljit had earlier promised. In one of his posts, he had written, “Full Movie, No Cuts,” but now it seems that the film’s release is uncertain because of the required cuts.

The CBFC's delay and suggested cuts are due to the film’s focus on a highly sensitive topic. Punjab 95 tells the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a man who bravely exposed the illegal actions of the Punjab Police during the 1990s. Khalra uncovered that the police were involved in the illegal killings and cremations of over 25,000 Sikh youth during the period of militancy. His courage led him to reveal the truth, which eventually caused him to face great danger.

Khalra disappeared in September 1995, while he was washing his car outside his house in Amritsar. His disappearance led to a long investigation, and eventually, six police officers were convicted and sentenced for his kidnapping and murder.

Along with the film’s delay, there has been another issue. The trailer for Punjab 95 was recently taken down from YouTube, and when people tried to watch it in India, they saw a message saying that access had been restricted. This led to many fans expressing frustration, with one social media user writing, “Why has the teaser been taken down from YouTube India? Sad to see the biased nature.”

This delay and the controversy surrounding the film’s release highlight the challenges that filmmakers sometimes face when dealing with sensitive political or historical topics. The movie’s future now depends on whether the filmmakers agree to make the cuts suggested by the CBFC, and when it will finally be allowed to reach the audience.
