On Saturday, the Delhi Police's Crime Branch arrested four people for their involvement in the illegal possession and trade of two rhino horns, worth ₹3 crore in the international market. The horns, which came from a white rhinoceros, are rare and highly valuable, making them a target for illegal trade.
The arrested individuals include Deepak Sharma, a resident of Lajpat Nagar, Suresh Kumar, Sant Ram, and Anil Kumar Sethi, all from Uttam Nagar. They were caught selling the horns in a raid that took place on January 9 after the police received a tip-off about the illegal activity.
To catch the criminals, the police set up a plan where Constable Naveen posed as a potential buyer. After negotiating the deal, the suspects agreed to sell the horns for ₹1 crore. They planned to deliver the horns to the buyer when the police raided a flat in Lajpat Nagar and arrested the four men. The authorities recovered the two horns during the operation.
The police said the accused could not show any documents to prove the legal possession of the rhino horns. Wildlife experts confirmed that the horns were from a white rhinoceros, an endangered species native to Africa.
Deepak Sharma, one of the accused, explained that the horns had been in his family for nearly 90 years. His grandfather had kept them as antiques, but due to financial problems worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, Sharma decided to sell them. He reached out to Suresh Kumar, a religious leader in Uttam Nagar, to sell the horns for ₹1 crore. Kumar then contacted Sant Ram, a government worker, who brought in Anil Kumar Sethi, a private worker, to help complete the sale.
The group was facing financial pressure. Suresh Kumar needed money for construction work at an ashram, and Sant Ram and Anil Kumar were in debt. They all saw the sale of the horns as a way to make quick money.
The police have registered a case under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, including charges for the illegal possession and trade of wildlife products. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to identify and arrest others involved in this illegal wildlife trafficking network.
The authorities are committed to cracking down on the illegal trade of rhino horns and protecting endangered species.
