Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted on Saturday that the dark web, cryptocurrency, online marketplaces, and drones continue to pose significant challenges for India. These issues need to be tackled with strict measures.

While chairing a regional conference on 'Drug Trafficking and National Security', Shah emphasized that India will not allow even a single kilogram of drugs to be smuggled into or out of the country. He added that the government has made great progress in eliminating many drug networks, as well as the terrorism linked to them. Several cases of narco-terrorism were uncovered in states like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, which Shah described as major achievements.

Shah acknowledged the continuing challenges posed by the dark web, cryptocurrency, online marketplaces, and drones, saying these issues still require attention. He stressed that a technical solution needs to be found through joint efforts between the central and state governments, along with the help of technocrats, to ensure the country's security and progress.

The Home Minister also pointed out that the fight against drugs has gained new momentum under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He mentioned that in the last 10 years, there has been a seven-fold increase in drug seizures, calling it a significant achievement. Shah praised the Modi government for sending a strong message of destroying the entire drug ecosystem through strict action.

In 2024, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and local police forces took one of the biggest actions against drugs, seizing narcotics worth Rs 16,914 crore. Shah described this as a major step towards creating a drug-free society. He emphasized that no country can progress with a young generation suffering from drug addiction, and it is everyone’s responsibility to fight this challenge together.

Shah compared the drug seizure statistics from two decades. Between 2004 and 2014, only 3.63 kg of drugs were seized, whereas, between 2014 and 2024, a massive 24 lakh kg of drugs were seized, showing a seven-fold increase. Additionally, in the last decade, drugs worth Rs 54,851 crore were destroyed, compared to Rs 8,150 crore in the earlier decade, marking an eight-fold rise in drug destruction.

The conference, organized by the NCB, focused on addressing the growing problem of drug trafficking and its impact on national security. The event also concentrated on eight northern states and Union Territories. Shah also launched a drug disposal fortnight, starting from January 11 to January 25, during which one lakh kg of narcotics worth Rs 8,600 crore will be destroyed.

Shah also inaugurated the new office complex of the NCB’s Bhopal zonal unit and extended the MANAS-2 helpline to all 36 states and UTs. The main goal of the conference is to improve the sharing of real-time information through the National Narcotics Helpline ‘MANAS’ portal, work together with Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTFs) in states and UTs, and evaluate the progress of states in fighting drug trafficking.

Other topics discussed at the conference included strengthening State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs), using the NIDAAN database to fight drug trafficking, implementing the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, creating special NDPS courts for quick trials of drug-related cases, and promoting a Whole-of-Government approach to combat drug trafficking.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is implementing a three-pronged strategy to achieve a drug-free India by 2047. This includes strengthening institutions, improving coordination between narcotics agencies, and launching a public awareness campaign.

The conference was attended by governors, lieutenant governors, chief ministers, and senior officials from the eight participating states and UTs. It also saw the participation of senior officers from various central ministries, departments, and law enforcement agencies.
