The parents of a 34-year-old doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata last year, have refused to accept the Rs 17 lakh compensation offered by a city court. This amount was ordered to be given to them after Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, was found guilty of the crime. Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment two days ago, but the case has caused shock and anger across the country.
The incident, which took place on August 9 last year, involved the tragic death of the young doctor, who was found in a seminar room at the hospital. Initially, the city police investigated the case, but it was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to concerns about possible evidence tampering. Roy was arrested the next day, and though he initially admitted to the crime, he later changed his story, claiming he was being framed.
In court, Judge Anirban Das, who oversaw the trial, explained that Roy had been found guilty based on strong evidence. Despite Roy's plea that he was innocent and had been "framed," the judge made it clear that the charges against him were proven during the trial.
While the prosecution had pushed for the death penalty, arguing that it would help restore public confidence, the court decided not to apply the "rarest of rare" category that is required for the death sentence. Instead, Roy was given a life sentence, as the court did not consider it a case for capital punishment.
At the court hearing, the victim's parents were present. They told the judge that they did not want the financial compensation, but instead sought justice for their daughter. The judge responded by saying that the compensation order had already been made and that they could use the money however they saw fit. He advised them not to view the amount as compensation for their loss but as part of the legal process.
Though the victim's parents chose not to accept the financial aid, the court's judgment has brought a sense of justice, even though the pain of losing their daughter remains with them. The case highlights the severe impact of such crimes on the families and the ongoing fight for justice.
