A court in Delhi has instructed the police to file an FIR against journalist Rana Ayyub over social media posts allegedly made between 2016 and 2017. These posts reportedly included content that insulted Hindu deities, promoted anti-India sentiments, and incited religious disharmony.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh passed this order while hearing a petition filed by an advocate who requested the court's intervention. The plea claimed that Ms. Ayyub’s posts on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) contained offensive material.
After reviewing the facts, the court stated that the allegations revealed possible offenses under Sections 153A, 295A, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These legal sections cover offenses such as promoting enmity between groups based on religion, deliberate acts intended to insult religious beliefs, and making statements that can cause public unrest.
The court emphasized the seriousness of the charges and noted that a proper investigation was necessary. It pointed out that the complainant alone would not be able to gather the required evidence. Therefore, the court found it appropriate to direct the police to step in and conduct a fair investigation.
In its order dated January 25, the court directed the station house officer (SHO) of the cyber police station in South Delhi to register the complaint as an FIR and investigate the matter thoroughly. The judge highlighted the importance of addressing such cases to maintain social harmony.
The court has scheduled the matter for further hearing next Tuesday, where it expects a compliance report from the police regarding the progress of the investigation.
