On Saturday, the Congress party criticized the Election Commission (EC) for the way it has been handling electoral matters. The party accused the EC of weakening the Constitution and disrespecting voters. This criticism came on National Voters’ Day, which celebrates the creation of the Election Commission on January 25, 1950.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his party’s concerns. He said, "There will be a lot of self-congratulation today but that will not change the fact that the way the Election Commission has been functioning makes a joke of the Constitution and insults the voters."
Ramesh reminded people about the importance of National Voters’ Day. This day honors the Election Commission, which played a key role in building India's democratic system.
He also highlighted the contributions of Sukumar Sen, the first Chairman of the Election Commission. Ramesh mentioned that Sen served as the Chief Election Commissioner for eight years and his "Report on the First General Elections in India 1951-52" is an important document. However, Ramesh noted that the work for preparing the first electoral roll had already been completed before Sen took charge.
Another important figure mentioned by Ramesh was TN Seshan, who made significant contributions to the Election Commission’s work. Ramesh acknowledged his vital role in shaping the body.
Despite this history, Ramesh expressed disappointment about how the Election Commission has been functioning in recent years. He claimed that over the past decade, the professionalism and independence of the Election Commission have been “severely compromised by the PM-HM duo,” referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Ramesh also criticized the EC’s decisions in recent state elections. He said that the Election Commission’s actions in Haryana and Maharashtra seemed biased and “shockingly” partisan. He pointed out that some of these decisions are now being challenged in the Supreme Court.
