New Delhi: Weeks of panic in Delhi schools caused by bomb threats have led to the discovery that a Class 12 student was behind the hoaxes. The boy, aiming to avoid his exams, sent fake bomb threat emails to several schools, carefully excluding his own.
The minor sent these emails at least six times, each time targeting different schools. To make the threats appear genuine, he included multiple schools in a single email. In one instance, he sent a threat to as many as 23 schools. Police revealed that the boy believed these threats would lead to exam cancellations and disruptions.
In recent incidents, several prominent schools, such as DPS RK Puram and GD Goenka School in Paschim Vihar, received bomb threats. One of the emails claimed small bombs had been planted in the school buildings and demanded $30,000 to defuse them. Following such threats, students were sent home, and bomb squads with sniffer dogs searched the premises. While nothing suspicious was ever found, the incidents caused significant disruption and alarm.
The situation sparked political reactions as well. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized the central government, which oversees the city police, for the repeated hoaxes and lapses in law and order. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed concern, stating that the capital had never experienced such incidents before.
In response to these events, Delhi Police and the Education Department organized training sessions for school staff and teachers to handle such emergencies. These efforts aim to ensure student safety and better preparedness in case of real threats.
The city also faced similar fake bomb threats in airlines, which led to emergency landings, flight delays, and unnecessary fuel consumption. Last year, a 25-year-old man was detained in Delhi for a similar hoax, and in another case, a 17-year-old school dropout in Mumbai was caught for sending threats to frame a friend.
The detained student’s actions wasted valuable resources and caused widespread fear. While investigations continue, authorities are working to prevent such incidents and maintain safety in schools and public spaces.
