The Union Cabinet has approved the refarming of 687 MHz of spectrum for mobile services, increasing the total to 1,587 MHz. This decision was announced by Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia at the COAI event on Friday. He explained that mobile services in India will need a total of 2,000 MHz of spectrum by 2030. The Cabinet's approval is a significant step toward meeting this demand, with further steps to be taken based on a report from the Committee of Secretaries, which is expected later this year.
Speaking at the Digicom Summit 2025, Scindia said, “Yesterday, the Cabinet approved the refarming of 687 MHz. This means the total spectrum will rise from 900 MHz to 1,587 MHz. Of this, 320 MHz will be released immediately, with some available by the end of next year and others by 2028-29. This will help us be ready for the demands of 2030.”
Scindia also emphasized that the government is committed to meeting the needs of the telecom industry and ensuring there are no obstacles in the country’s digital telecom growth. However, he noted that there is still a gap of roughly 300 MHz. He explained that the second round of spectrum allocation is being worked on by the Committee of Secretaries, and their report will be ready by mid-2025. Based on this report, the government will take further steps to ensure smooth progress in India’s telecom sector.
