On Sunday, Ramesh Bidhuri, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, denied claims made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that he might be considered as the BJP's candidate for the Chief Minister role in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. He made it clear that he is not in the running for the top post and called these talks "totally baseless." Bidhuri, who is contesting the elections from the Kalkaji seat against Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, said he remains dedicated to the people and his party. He further clarified that he would continue serving the people of Delhi tirelessly.
The AAP, led by National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, had suggested that the BJP might soon announce Ramesh Bidhuri as its Chief Minister candidate. Kejriwal even claimed that he had received reliable information that the BJP would make such an announcement in the coming days. To make his point clearer, Kejriwal challenged Bidhuri to a public debate to allow the people of Delhi to decide who would be the better choice for Chief Minister.
In response, Bidhuri stated that he is a loyal worker of the BJP and has always worked hard for the party. He reminded the people that he has served the party for more than 25 years in various important roles. During this time, he had been elected as an MP twice, and as an MLA three times. He emphasized that the party has always trusted him and provided him with the opportunity to serve the people, and now, he is ready to do so for the fourth time in Kalkaji.
Bidhuri also took a dig at Kejriwal, accusing him of spreading false information. He firmly rejected any idea of being a contender for the position of Chief Minister. "I am not a claimant for any post," he said, adding that he is fully dedicated to serving the people of Delhi.
Meanwhile, Kejriwal continued his criticism of the BJP. He claimed that by mentioning Bidhuri’s name, the BJP had already accepted that they would not form the government in Delhi. According to Kejriwal, the people of Delhi are upset with his government’s performance, pointing to issues like the excise policy scam, the alleged Mohalla Clinic scam, and various infrastructural problems, such as broken roads and dirty drinking water.
Atishi, who is also seeking re-election from Kalkaji, joined in the criticism, suggesting that the BJP’s decision to pick Ramesh Bidhuri as their candidate was a mistake. She attacked Bidhuri for his use of offensive language and called out the BJP for choosing a leader who "hurls the most abuses."
The BJP quickly dismissed these claims as rumors, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressing the issue at a public meeting. Shah criticized Kejriwal for spreading "false propaganda" for political gain and questioned his authority to decide the BJP's choice for Chief Minister. Shah accused Kejriwal of using deceitful tactics to mislead the public, saying that the people of Delhi are wise enough to see through his actions.
Ramesh Bidhuri’s remarks about Atishi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi had caused some controversy earlier. He had made derogatory comments about Atishi's father and also compared smooth roads in Kalkaji to "Priyanka Gandhi's cheeks," which was widely condemned as insulting to women. Following the backlash, Bidhuri expressed regret for his remarks.
The Delhi Assembly elections are set to take place on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. AAP is aiming for a third consecutive term in office after winning 67 seats in the 2015 elections and 62 seats in 2020. On the other hand, the BJP secured only three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020, while Congress failed to win any seats in both elections.
