BCCI imposes strict new rules for cricketers, families after Australia loss

India's heavy 1-3 defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has led to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) taking strong actions to address the team's poor performance and improve future results. This loss has not only ended India's chances of qualifying for the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final but also triggered changes within the Indian cricket team.

At a recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), the BCCI discussed several important decisions to help the team get back on track. One major decision involves limiting the time players’ families can stay with them on overseas tours. From now on, cricketers' wives and families will only be allowed to stay for a maximum of 14 days if the tour lasts 45 days or longer. This rule follows the controversy caused by some players, like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, having their families with them for the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In another move, the BCCI has also decided that players must travel only on the team bus during tours. This decision follows incidents where senior players, such as Virat Kohli, were seen traveling separately during the recent series. The BCCI hopes this new rule will help improve team unity and spirit.

The performance of the Indian team’s support staff, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, has also been reviewed. After back-to-back losses to New Zealand at home and Australia abroad, the BCCI has decided that support staff contracts will now be limited to three years. This is part of a broader effort to improve the team’s results. Gambhir, who was appointed as head coach on July 9, 2024, has a contract that runs until December 31, 2027, which might extend beyond the new three-year limit unless exceptions are made.

Additionally, there is a new rule about players’ luggage on tours. The BCCI will no longer cover extra charges for luggage that exceeds 150kg. If players need to carry more than that, they will have to pay the additional charges themselves.

These changes come as part of the BCCI’s plan to ensure that the Indian cricket team performs better in future international series and restores its competitive edge.
