Bangladesh fell short of direct qualification for the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup following an eight-wicket loss to West Indies in the third ODI, held in Basseterre on Friday. The defeat left Bangladesh with 21 points in the ICC Women's Championship table, tying with New Zealand. However, New Zealand secured the sixth and final automatic spot due to having more wins (nine) compared to Bangladesh's eight.
New Zealand will now join Australia, India, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka as the six teams directly qualified for the World Cup, which is set to take place in India later this year. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will have to compete in the World Cup qualifiers alongside West Indies, Pakistan, and Ireland. Additionally, Scotland and Thailand will join these qualifiers, where only two teams from the group will earn a place in the main tournament.
The third ODI turned out to be a one-sided contest. Batting first, Bangladesh managed only 118 runs in 43.5 overs. Sharmin Akhter was the top scorer with 37 runs. At one stage, Bangladesh appeared steady at 94 for 3, but their batting lineup collapsed drastically. They lost their last seven wickets for just 24 runs in 13 overs.
For West Indies, Karishma Ramharack was the star with the ball, taking four wickets while giving away only 12 runs in her 6.5 overs. This was her second consecutive four-wicket haul in the series. Zaida James also contributed with two wickets, further piling pressure on the Bangladeshi batters.
Chasing 119, West Indies reached the target comfortably in 27.3 overs. Qiana Joseph led the charge with 39 runs, while Deandra Dottin stayed unbeaten on 33 to guide her team home. For Bangladesh, Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter took one wicket each, but their efforts couldn’t stop the West Indies batters.
Bangladesh’s tour of the West Indies is not over yet. They will stay in Basseterre for a three-match T20I series, scheduled to take place on January 27, 29, and 31. This will give the team another opportunity to regain form and confidence.
