Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has received significant support for her campaign through crowdfunding, managing to raise ₹18.56 lakh within 24 hours of launching the initiative. The funds are intended to help her contest in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Atishi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from the Kalkaji constituency, started the campaign on Sunday, January 12, with an appeal to her supporters to help her reach a target of ₹40 lakh. In just a day, 422 donors came forward to contribute, a response she described as "incredible."
Expressing her gratitude, Atishi emphasized that this overwhelming support reflects the people’s unwavering faith in the honest and transformative politics of the Aam Aadmi Party. She shared her thoughts on X, formerly Twitter, and highlighted the trust voters have in the work done by her and her party.
Atishi plans to file her nomination papers on Monday. Before heading to file, she will visit the Kalkaji Temple to seek blessings from Goddess Kalka and pray at the Giri Nagar Gurdwara. Sharing her plans on X in Hindi, she said she would start her nomination rally after seeking blessings.
The campaign is not without challenges. Atishi is up against two major rivals: Ramesh Bidhuri from the BJP, a former Member of Parliament, and Congress leader Alka Lamba. The contest has already turned contentious, with Bidhuri making derogatory remarks about Atishi, accusing her of "changing her father" by altering her surname from Marlena to Singh. Atishi condemned these remarks, calling them a sign of how low the BJP has stooped for political gains. During a press conference, she became emotional while addressing the issue, but Bidhuri dismissed her reaction as "drama" and "crocodile tears." In response, Atishi accused Bidhuri of being the BJP’s unofficial Chief Minister candidate, though BJP leaders dismissed this claim as completely baseless.
The campaign has also drawn criticism from Congress leaders. Telangana Congress MP Revanth Reddy questioned the need for crowdfunding, alleging that it stemmed from the fallout of the alleged liquor policy scam in Delhi. He suggested that the AAP required funds after deals with certain parties fell through.
Atishi is no stranger to the Kalkaji constituency, having won it in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections with a large margin, defeating BJP candidate Dharambir Singh. The Aam Aadmi Party secured a landslide victory in that election, retaining control of the 70-member Delhi Assembly.
With the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5 and results to be announced on February 8, Atishi continues to gather support and remains optimistic about her re-election bid. Her campaign has become a reflection of the faith people have in the work and vision of the Aam Aadmi Party.
