Arvind Kejriwal, the National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has announced that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) will support his party in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections.
Kejriwal, who has previously served as the Chief Minister of Delhi, also criticized the Congress party for secretly working with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This comes at a time when all four parties — AAP, TMC, SP, and Congress — are part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) and had worked together in last year’s Lok Sabha elections.
On Wednesday, Kejriwal took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is the leader of TMC. Kejriwal said, "TMC has announced support to AAP in Delhi elections. I am personally grateful to Mamata Didi. Thank you, Didi. You have always supported and blessed us in our good and bad times."
In response, TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien posted, "We have your back @AamAadmiParty."
The day before, Kejriwal also thanked Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav for his party's support in the Delhi elections. Kejriwal wrote on X, "Thank you very much Akhilesh ji. You always support and stand with us. I and the people of Delhi are grateful for this."
Though there was no official announcement from Akhilesh Yadav or SP, sources confirmed that Yadav expressed his party’s support for AAP after a press conference on Tuesday. Both TMC and SP had supported AAP in the 2020 Delhi assembly elections as well. In the 2020 elections, AAP won a landslide victory, securing 62 out of 70 seats.
On the other hand, Kejriwal criticized the Congress after their leader, Ashok Gehlot, suggested that AAP was delusional about winning the upcoming polls. Gehlot said that Congress was campaigning strongly and was confident of a good result in the elections.
In response, Kejriwal accused the Congress of secretly working with the BJP, calling it a "misconception" that the Congress would win just because of their success in the previous two elections. Kejriwal wrote on X, "The Congress has made it clear that AAP is its opposition in Delhi, and that BJP is their partner."
The relationship between AAP and Congress has been tense for some time. While both parties were part of the INDIA alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, they are now contesting the Delhi assembly elections separately. The two parties have blamed each other for their poor performance in Delhi during the Lok Sabha polls. Last month, Delhi Congress leader Ajay Maken’s comment that a tie-up with AAP was a "mistake" worsened the relationship even further.
The Delhi Assembly elections are set to take place on February 5, with the results expected to be announced on February 8.
The Congress party, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, has faced setbacks in the last two assembly elections, failing to win any seats. In contrast, AAP has been dominant in the city, winning 62 out of 70 seats in the 2020 assembly elections, while the BJP only managed to secure eight seats.
