Arvind Kejriwal accuses Haryana of attempting to influence election

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Friday accused the Haryana government of plotting a political conspiracy aimed at causing a water crisis in Delhi. Kejriwal claimed that Haryana's actions were an attempt to damage his party's reputation ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. According to him, Haryana's actions led to dangerous ammonia levels in the Yamuna River, threatening to affect the water supply for millions of Delhi residents.

Kejriwal made these claims after visiting the Election Commission office to respond to a notice regarding his remark about "poison mixed" in Yamuna water. He was joined by Delhi's Chief Minister Atishi and Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann during the visit.

In a statement to reporters, Kejriwal said that the ammonia level in the Yamuna River had been unusually high at 7 parts per million (ppm) between January 26 and 27. However, following their efforts, the ammonia level had decreased to 2.1 ppm. Kejriwal praised the "successful struggle" that led to the improvement and suggested that the high ammonia levels were part of a plan by the BJP-led Haryana government to harm Delhi’s water supply.

Atishi, Delhi's Water Minister, had noticed the rising ammonia levels in the Yamuna as early as December. Together with Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, she worked hard to address the problem, according to Kejriwal.

In his response to the Election Commission, Kejriwal explained that the high ammonia levels in the water were a form of "poison," which had been detected by the Delhi Jal Board and other authorities. He also criticized the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Rajiv Kumar, accusing him of losing people's trust during his tenure. Kejriwal expressed concerns that the CEC’s actions could harm Indian democracy and the integrity of the Election Commission.

The Election Commission had issued two notices to Kejriwal, asking him to explain his comments about the BJP government in Haryana allegedly mixing "poison" into the Yamuna water and causing a "genocide" in Delhi. The poll panel, however, assured that they gave Kejriwal a chance to present his side of the story before making any decisions.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal argued that nearly one crore (10 million) people in Delhi could have faced a serious water crisis if he had not raised the alarm about the water contamination. He accused Haryana of either creating health issues in Delhi or triggering an artificial water shortage, which could affect other states during elections.
Kejriwal also pointed out that Atishi had reached out to Haryana's Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, asking him to either reduce the ammonia levels or release more water from the Yamuna to Delhi. However, Saini reportedly stopped responding after Atishi contacted him multiple times, which Kejriwal believed pointed to a political agenda.

Despite the seriousness of the issue, Kejriwal said that Delhi and Punjab's Chief Ministers did not want to turn the situation into a political matter. However, he argued that a case should be filed against Haryana's Chief Minister for his lack of response.

Kejriwal concluded by slamming the Election Commission, stating that it was supposed to be an example of how to conduct fair elections worldwide. If the CEC failed to act against the BJP, it would raise questions about the health of India's democracy, he said.
