Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah spoke on Friday about how agriculture can become a profitable business if science is included in the cooperative sector. He also took a jibe at NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, questioning his efforts when he was the Agriculture Minister in the Congress-led UPA government (2004-2014). Shah said that just becoming a leader is not enough, and pointed out that action needs to be taken on the ground to improve the sector.
While addressing a meeting in Malegaon, located in north Maharashtra’s Nashik district, Shah emphasized the importance of science in agriculture. He reminded the audience that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had added 'Jai Vigyan' (Hail Science) to the famous slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' (Hail Soldiers, Hail Farmers), showing the importance of science in farming.
Shah also announced that his ministry had set up a separate entity, Bharat Cooperative Organics Ltd, which is officially known as National Cooperative Organics Ltd. This new entity will focus on packaging and marketing organic farm products. He stressed that a strong cooperative sector is key to achieving true self-reliance (Atmanirbhar).
Shah mentioned that there are 1.18 lakh members in the cooperative sector, and his government had already solved several long-pending issues in the cooperation department, which was created in July 2021. He also highlighted the steps his government has taken, such as reducing taxes worth Rs 46,000 crore for sugar mills, setting up new storage facilities, disbursing loans, and promoting ethanol blending. Ethanol, a product made from sugarcane, can be mixed with petrol, which helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lowers carbon emissions.
Taking another shot at Sharad Pawar, Shah questioned what Pawar had done for the cooperative sector during his ten years as Union Agriculture Minister. Shah asked if Pawar had resolved the tax issues or formed new rules for the sector.
The Ministry of Cooperation, which is now responsible for the administrative, legal, and policy framework for the cooperative movement in India, was established as a separate entity by the Modi government in July 2021.
