Akasa Air Warned by DGCA for Lapses, Gets Caution from Aviation Watchdog

Aviation watchdog DGCA has recently issued a warning letter to Akasa Air's accountable manager, Vinay Dube, who is also the airline's founder and CEO, for some regulatory lapses. This comes just days after Akasa Air received another warning for violations related to handling dangerous goods.

On Tuesday the DGCA pointed out two main issues in their warning to the airline. First, there was a hard landing of an aircraft, and second, the operations manual was not updated within the required time frame. The DGCA warned Akasa Air's accountable manager to be extra careful to avoid any future non-compliance with regulations.

This is a rare occurrence as Akasa Air has now received two warning letters in less than a week. These warnings add to the list of actions taken against the young airline, which is only a little over two years old. Recently, Akasa Air faced a six-month suspension for its head of operations and head of training due to issues with pilot training.

Vinay Dube, who is responsible for the operations of Akasa Air through SNV Aviation Pvt Ltd, was specifically mentioned in the warning letter issued by DGCA on January 13. The letter also mentioned the suspension of the airline’s head of operations and head of training, both of whom were suspended by the DGCA following their investigations.

One of the incidents the DGCA flagged was a hard landing that took place in March 2024. The regulator learned about this incident during an inspection in October 2024. The pilot involved in this incident was relieved from further training following the regulator’s order issued last month. Additionally, the airline had not updated its operations manual within the necessary time frame, which resulted in a show-cause notice being issued last month as well.

Earlier, on January 9, DGCA had warned Akasa Air for lapses related to the handling of lithium batteries during an inspection conducted on December 12 in Ahmedabad. The DGCA found serious issues during this inspection, including the airline accepting electronic devices with lithium batteries without checking the battery power or verifying their condition. Furthermore, the airline was found to be accepting shipments of lithium batteries that exceeded the weight limit allowed for passenger aircraft.

After the DGCA raised concerns, Akasa Air took corrective measures. The airline issued circulars to its cargo agents and staff, as well as caution letters to the staff responsible for accepting cargo. The DGCA acknowledged these corrective actions but still warned the airline to be more cautious about compliance with regulations for transporting dangerous goods by air. The regulator emphasized that such violations should not happen again in the future.

The DGCA has also instructed Akasa Air to conduct internal audits at all its cargo acceptance and handling facilities within 30 days of receiving the warning letter to ensure they comply with regulations.

In another instance in October 2024, the DGCA imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Akasa Air for failing to provide timely compensation to passengers who were denied boarding at Bangalore Airport in September.

Overall, the DGCA’s warnings to Akasa Air highlight the importance of strict adherence to aviation regulations, especially when it comes to safety and the handling of dangerous goods.
