Airtel has tweaked some of its existing popular prepaid recharge plans at the beginning of the year 2025. There have been some assumptions that these modifications have been carried out in response to a recent directive from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI. The new moves seem to highlight voice calls and SMS benefits along with a little decrease in the data offers. Let's explore in detail about what has been changed.
The first modified plan is the Airtel Rs 509 prepaid recharge. It is still for 84 days but has been modified to support customers who would require voice calls and SMS benefits predominantly. The pack no longer provides mobile data; instead, there are unlimited voice calls and 900 SMS. Though the data benefit has been taken away, the plan offers more free benefits such as Airtel Xstream app access, Apollo 24/7 Circle membership, and Hello Tunes. For users who still need data, Airtel offers another option in the form of the Rs 569 plan, which also offers 6GB of data along with the same voice and SMS benefits.
The second revised plan is the Airtel Rs 1,999 yearly pack. The unlimited voice calls and 3,000 free SMS will still be provided; however, the previously included 24GB of mobile data is now removed. Additional services will be available, including the Airtel Xstream app, membership of Apollo 24/7 Circle, and Hello Tunes.
These changes are in response to the new directive that TRAI gave to operators whereby they are forced to focus more on STVs for voice and SMS services. The new plans offer strong benefits in terms of voice and SMS, though customers who have a need for more data will have to buy separate data packs. Unlimited package seekers may also opt for some other plans, which offer unlimited benefits. There is also an overage charge of SMS at Rs 1 for local and Rs 1.5 for STD messages, beyond the free limits.
The update targets voice services based on current demand with options more geared towards voice-calling and messaging users, while customers seeking greater data benefits would have to either buy extra packs or seek a different plan altogether.
