Macrotech Developers Limited, a company led by Abhishek Lodha, has gone to the Bombay High Court seeking a legal order to stop his younger brother, Abhinandan Lodha, from using the "Lodha" brand name for his real estate business. The court case will be heard on January 27 by Justice Arif Doctor.
Macrotech Developers has also requested a temporary order to stop Abhinandan's company, House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL), from using the name "Lodha" or "Lodha Group." The lawsuit, filed last week, claims damages worth ₹5,000 crore. It argues that the name "Lodha" is a registered trademark owned by Macrotech Developers and should not be used by anyone else.
In the court papers, Macrotech Developers explained that it is the main company of the Lodha Group, which has been a well-known real estate developer since the early 1980s. The company offers residential and commercial properties under the "Lodha" brand name. Macrotech Developers claims that they own the trademark for the name "Lodha" and other related names, which have become an important part of their identity.
According to the lawsuit, there was an agreement that each family member would take on certain assets and debts. However, Abhinandan Lodha reportedly insisted on only taking money. This decision left Abhishek and their parents with a huge ₹20,000-crore debt. Abhinandan, on the other hand, left to start his own business, receiving a ₹ 1,000 crore payout. The lawsuit says that from 2015 to 2020, Abhishek and the family had a tough time due to this large debt.
Macrotech Developers also shared that in April 2021, the company was successfully listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), under the leadership of Abhishek Lodha. Since then, the company’s stock has grown significantly, and its market value has reached over ₹1 lakh crore. The stock is also part of the Nifty Next 50 Index. As of January 2025, the share price is around ₹1,200.
After the company’s IPO, when the Lodha Group’s reputation was growing, Abhinandan Lodha started his own real estate business, focusing on land plots. He initially tried to use the "Lodha" logo in his advertisements but was stopped by Abhishek. Following this, he began calling his business "House of Abhinandan Lodha" (HoABL). The Trademark Registry even raised concerns that the "Lodha" trademark was too similar to the one already registered by Macrotech Developers.
The lawsuit points out that despite repeated efforts by the family to convince Abhinandan to operate his business under a different name, he continued using the "Lodha" brand name deliberately. The goal was to confuse customers and make them think that his company, HoABL, was connected to the Lodha Group.
Macrotech Developers now seeks the court’s intervention to protect its brand name and prevent any further confusion caused by the use of the “Lodha” name by Abhinandan’s business.
