After India suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat against New Zealand at home, things didn’t improve much for the team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India lost 3-1 to Australia, which led them to be eliminated from the World Test Championship (WTC) race. The senior batsmen, especially captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, struggled in the longest format of the game, and this raised questions about their future in Test cricket.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unhappy with the performance of the players in Test matches. After the loss to Australia, the BCCI decided that players must regularly play in domestic cricket. This decision led many Indian cricketers to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. However, despite the increased involvement, many top players, including Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Rajat Patidar, failed to perform well in the domestic games.
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra commented on the poor performances in the Ranji Trophy, highlighting how Mumbai, a team full of stars, struggled against Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed out that despite the presence of key players like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur, the team couldn’t manage to score well. He also criticized other teams for their weak batting performances, saying it was incredible how no one seemed to be scoring runs.
However, Chopra emphasized that poor form in domestic cricket, such as the Ranji Trophy, wouldn’t impact the players’ careers or their performance in Test matches. He pointed out that the next Test match was still five months away, so whether players scored runs or not in domestic cricket would not affect their form for the national team.
Interestingly, the only player who stood out in the ongoing Ranji season was Ravindra Jadeja. He returned to domestic cricket and performed excellently, taking 12 wickets in a match against Delhi. He had a five-wicket haul in the first innings and took seven wickets in the second. Additionally, he contributed 38 runs with the bat in the first innings, making him the only Test player to impress in the Ranji Trophy this season.
