Today, a significant earthquake occurred in Nepal that killed 95 people. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and triggered tremors that also reverberated in parts of India, especially Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal. The epicentre of the quake was situated in Tingri county, Shigatse city, around 400 kilometers southwest of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Tingri is an attractive destination for tourists visiting Mount Everest.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) at 6:35 am did report an earthquake. However, right after the first one, two more smaller ones did hit. The second one, which was at a depth of 10 km and had a magnitude of 4.7, struck at 7:02 am. Then, at 7:07 am and a depth of 30 km, the third one with a magnitude of 4.9 hit.
Nepal is a country in the geologically active area of the meeting point of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, where the Himalayas are formed. Thus, it is very prone to earthquakes. A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring more than 22,000, destroying over half a million homes.
In India, the tremors were strongly felt in Bihar, where people rushed out of their homes and apartments. Thankfully, there have been no reports of significant damage to property due to the earthquake.
