The Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, which will revise the salaries of millions of Central government employees. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this announcement on Thursday, January 16. With this approval, government workers can expect a salary increase, along with a rise in their Dearness Allowance (DA).
The 8th Pay Commission will also take into account the pensions and allowances of retired Central government employees. For a long time, government employees and retirees have been waiting for a revision of their pay scales, and now this will be possible with the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission.
This approval comes just days before the Budget 2025 is expected to be announced. While Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Cabinet has approved the 8th Pay Commission, he did not mention the exact date for its formation. However, the commission will likely be formed by 2026, with reports suggesting that the 8th Pay Commission will be officially implemented starting January 1, 2026.
The government will soon appoint a chairman and two members to oversee the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, Ashwini Vaishnaw said. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
For those wondering about the previous Pay Commission, the 7th Pay Commission was set up in 2016, and its term will end on December 31, 2025. As the 7th Pay Commission's term comes to an end, the decision to form the 8th Pay Commission was made to ensure that Central government employees continue to get fair pay revisions.
Pay commissions are crucial for determining the salary structures, allowances, and benefits for government employees. The recommendations of these commissions impact millions of workers and pensioners, playing an important role in their financial well-being.
