The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a new oral polio vaccine, called nOPV2, marking a significant step in the global fight to eradicate polio.
WHO said the prequalification confirms the vaccine meets international standards for quality, safety, and effectiveness. This allows UN agencies like UNICEF to procure and use it in immunization campaigns worldwide.
Designed to be less likely to mutate than previous oral polio vaccines, nOPV2 reduces the risk of triggering new outbreaks while continuing to stop the spread of the virus. Health experts believe this innovation will strengthen efforts to protect children and communities from polio.
