Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father were recently released from immigration detention and have returned safely to their home in Minnesota. They had been held at a detention center in Texas after being detained by immigration officers in a suburb of Minneapolis on January 20.
The father and son were taken from Minnesota to a facility in Dilley, Texas. Their release came after a judge ordered it, and they were brought back to Minnesota over the weekend. Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro personally went to Dilley on Saturday night to pick them up and escorted them home on Sunday.
A spokesperson for Congressman Castro confirmed that Liam and his father had arrived back home. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to requests for comments on the case.
The story gained attention because of photos showing Liam wearing a blue bunny hat and carrying a Spider-Man backpack while surrounded by immigration officers. These images caused public concern and anger over how immigration enforcement was handled.
Neighbors and school officials said immigration officers used Liam in a way that upset many people. They claimed officers asked Liam to knock on the door of his home to get his mother to open it, using the young boy as "bait." However, the Department of Homeland Security denied this and said the father had actually fled on foot, leaving Liam alone in a running car in the driveway.
While on the plane back to Minnesota, Congressman Castro wrote a letter to Liam. In the letter, he told the young boy that his situation had touched many people and that he had "moved the world." Castro reminded Liam that America is strong because of immigrants, not despite them. The letter was shared on social media and received a lot of support.
Photos shared by Castro also showed Liam wearing his bunny hat and carrying a Pikachu backpack, symbols that had come to represent his story.
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar expressed her happiness that Liam was back home. She said Liam should be in school and with his family, not in detention. She also called for ICE, the immigration agency, to end such detentions.
Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota posted a photo on social media with Liam, his father, and Congressman Castro. She was holding Liam's Spider-Man backpack and welcomed him home with warm words and hearts.
This case has sparked much discussion about immigration policies and how families are treated during enforcement actions. Many people are now calling for changes to ensure children like Liam can stay safe and with their families.
