In a gripping finale at Stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country, UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider Igor Arrieta delivered a standout performance, finishing second after an intense uphill sprint in Basauri. The stage was ultimately claimed by Ineos Grenadiers’ Axel Laurance, who surged ahead in the final meters.
The race unfolded as a fierce contest right from the start, with riders battling hard to form a decisive breakaway. Arrieta showed determination and resilience, ensuring his place among the select group that managed to push ahead of the peloton.
Once in the lead group, the young Basque rider played a key role in maintaining and extending the gap. The breakaway built a solid advantage of around 1 minute 30 seconds heading into the penultimate climb, setting the stage for a tactical and physically demanding finale.
On the challenging Bikotx Gane climb, Arrieta increased the pace alongside a small group of riders, including Laurance. Their coordinated effort helped stretch the lead to nearly two minutes as they approached the final ascent of Sarasola.
Using his local knowledge, Arrieta launched a decisive move over the summit of the final climb. Only Laurance was able to match his acceleration, and the duo broke clear from the rest of the group, setting up a head-to-head battle for the stage win.
As they approached the final 20 kilometers, both riders worked together efficiently to stay ahead. However, with the uphill finish favoring explosive sprinters, Arrieta faced a tactical challenge against the fast-finishing Frenchman.
In a bold move, Arrieta initiated the sprint early in Basauri, attempting to catch Laurance off guard. Despite his effort, Laurance responded strongly and overtook him in the final 75 meters to secure victory.
Although narrowly missing out on the win, Arrieta’s impressive ride earned him the combativity award and a well-deserved place on the podium. The performance marked a significant achievement for the Navarre-born rider, highlighting his potential and determination on home roads.
