Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi suffered a possible left thigh injury during his team’s thrilling 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Sunday night.
The injury scare happened in the 70th minute when Messi appeared uncomfortable after taking a free kick. The Argentine star was seen holding the upper part of his left thigh before asking to be substituted.
Messi was replaced by Mateo Silvetti in the 73rd minute and later walked off the field on his own before heading to the locker room. There has been no official update yet on the seriousness of the injury.
The 38-year-old forward has been in outstanding form this season for Inter Miami CF. Messi currently leads the MLS with 20 goal contributions, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in just 14 matches.
Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has recorded 107 goal contributions, including 62 goals and 45 assists, in 67 appearances for the club.
The injury comes at an important time as MLS will now take a six-week break due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 11 and runs until July 19.
Messi is expected to represent Argentina national football team in the tournament, although the final squad has not yet been announced.
Argentina will begin their Group J campaign against Algeria national football team on June 16 in Kansas City. Before the tournament, Argentina will play friendly matches against Honduras national football team on June 6 and Iceland national football team on June 9.
