The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) has revealed an innovative approach to treating Multiple Sclerosis (MS) through the use of the THERAKOS CELLEX system for photopheresis. This initiative is part of a clinical trial authorized by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, presenting a new therapeutic pathway for individuals grappling with this complex neurological disorder, with the aim of enhancing their quality of life and managing symptoms more effectively.
MS is a chronic disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the nervous system, resulting in challenges with movement, balance, and speech. Though existing treatments are available, many patients eventually find that these standard options cease to be effective. New avenues for treatment are urgently needed for these individuals. The extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) technique being studied by ADSCC presents promising alternatives for patients lacking options.
ECP, or photopheresis, has been utilized for various other medical conditions, including graft-versus-host disease and specific lymphomas. In the context of MS, the process entails extracting a patient’s white blood cells, treating them with light outside the body, and reinfusing them to the patient. This method aims to recalibrate the immune system, potentially decelerating MS progression and alleviating symptoms like mobility, balance, and speech difficulties.
This treatment is part of the PHOMS clinical study conducted by ADSCC and sanctioned by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi. The focus is on patients with Secondary Progressive MS and Relapsing-Remitting MS. Many participants have noted significant improvements in their walking, balance, and communication, showcasing advancements not achievable with standard therapies. These encouraging outcomes suggest that photopheresis could redefine treatment for those affected by MS.
Prof. Yendry Ventura, the CEO of ADSCC, emphasized the collaborative efforts among stakeholders in Abu Dhabi’s healthcare landscape, including the DOH and the MS Society, as vital to the study’s achievements. He mentioned that the forthcoming results could lead to the worldwide adoption of this aid for MS, further solidifying the UAE’s role as a pioneer in cell and gene therapy.
Sandra Thompson, Co-CEO of Therakos LLC, commended the expertise and commitment displayed by ADSCC.
