The escalating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is pushing families into heart-wrenching decisions, as poverty and hunger tighten their grip on daily life.
In Ghor province, each day sees hundreds of men seeking work in hopes of securing food for their loved ones, yet many return home disheartened after hours of waiting.
Numerous fathers have revealed their struggles to nourish their children as food scarcity and soaring unemployment deepen their desperation. Some have reported that their kids have gone days without sufficient food.
One father, Abdul Rashid Azimi, disclosed he is contemplating the heart-wrenching decision to sell one of his young daughters for marriage or domestic labor, as providing for the family has become impossible. He termed the choice painful but felt it was his only recourse.
Similarly, Saeed Ahmad admitted he has already consented to give away his five-year-old daughter in exchange for funds necessary for her medical care. He noted that the child requires urgent surgery for which the family has no financial means.
The humanitarian landscape has deteriorated significantly following substantial cuts to international aid over the last couple of years. Afghanistan is grappling with extreme drought conditions, further escalating food insecurity and pushing millions towards famine.
In provincial hospitals, medical professionals report alarming increases in child malnutrition and infant mortality rates. Overcrowded wards, medicine shortages, and a rising number of severely underweight infants are making survival increasingly difficult.
Aid organizations persist in their warnings, stressing that without immediate humanitarian intervention, millions of Afghans find themselves at a heightened risk as the nation's economic crisis amplifies.
