A historic political shift is underway in West Bengal as Bharatiya Janata Party's Suvendu Adhikari prepares to be sworn in as the state's first BJP Chief Minister. This transformation follows the BJP's remarkable success in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, where they clinched 207 of 294 seats, effectively ending the long-standing rule of the Trinamool Congress.
On Friday, BJP MLAs gathered to unanimously elect Adhikari as the leader of their legislature party in a meeting that included Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The support for Adhikari's candidacy from key leaders and legislators was clear, paving the way for him to establish the next government in West Bengal. Amit Shah confirmed that all proposals during the meeting indicated strong backing for Adhikari.
After being elected as the legislature party leader, Adhikari, accompanied by senior BJP members such as Dilip Ghosh and Locket Chatterjee, visited Lok Bhavan in Kolkata. There, he formally submitted his claim to form a government to Governor R.N. Ravi, who is anticipated to extend a formal invitation for the BJP to establish the new administration following their significant Assembly majority.
The oath-taking ceremony is set for Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday. The event will see attendance from numerous senior BJP officials, Union ministers, and chief ministers from NDA states. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are expected to grace the occasion, which is being celebrated by the BJP as a monumental moment for West Bengal's political landscape.
Adhikari’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s role represents a pivotal change in Bengal’s political dynamics. He previously held a significant position in the Trinamool Congress before joining the BJP ahead of the 2021 elections, where he emerged as a formidable critique of the ruling party. His political stature rose notably after he won against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, enhancing his standing within the BJP.
The BJP's overwhelming electoral win has provoked widespread political commentary nationwide. Analysts suggest that this outcome could redefine the political framework of eastern India and further bolster the BJP's presence on the national stage. The Trinamool Congress, which only managed to secure 80 seats, is experiencing one of its most significant electoral defeats after holding power for more than a decade.
In anticipation of the ceremony, security measures have been enhanced across Kolkata, as tens of thousands of BJP supporters are expected to converge at Brigade Parade Ground. This event is being characterized as one of the most important political transformations in West Bengal since independence, with Suvendu Adhikari gearing up to helm the state’s first BJP administration.
