The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Oman has entered into a strategic partnership with Future Cities Company, known as “Tadum,” to implement an advanced system designed to track fishing vessels throughout the nation. The agreement, formalized by Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi and Eng. Abdullah Rashid Al Badi, CEO of Tadum, marks a significant national initiative aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems while modernizing the fishing industry. This technology allows for continuous, 24/7 monitoring of boat movements, improving logistics and response times during sea emergencies.
The newly established system aspires to create a comprehensive national network that provides real-time updates on fishing boat activities, detailing their routes and sailing patterns. By harnessing this information, the Ministry can gain insights into fishing operations and formulate more effective management policies. It also plays a crucial role in conserving fish populations by promptly identifying illegal fishing activities and swiftly addressing them at their locations.
Moreover, the project enhances maritime safety by mitigating risks at sea and expediting search and rescue efforts. In emergencies, the system offers instantaneous updates to the operations center. To ensure complete and systematic coverage of Oman’s fishing vessels, traditional fishing boats will be integrated into the system in phases. Utilizing a coastal LoRaWAN network that extends up to 40 kilometers, and potentially 70 kilometers in certain regions, the technology integrates satellite links to provide uninterrupted data flow even in remote marine areas. The system meticulously logs details including location, speed, direction, status of stops, emergency alerts, and any signs of device tampering, ensuring an accurate record of boat activities.
Fishermen will greatly benefit from improved safety features. A dedicated emergency button enables immediate alerts in case of emergencies at sea. The detailed trip records also aid in preventing loss of boats and provide an official digital archive for future reference. For the Ministry, this system will enhance fisheries monitoring, facilitate the development of optimal fishing regulations, combat illegal fishing practices, and bolster national maritime security by liaising directly with emergency and risk-management authorities.
This agreement aligns with Oman’s overarching strategy towards digital modernization within the maritime sector, ensuring that government agencies can enhance safety, deliver superior services to fishermen, and preserve the marine environment with reliable, state-of-the-art technology.
