In a formal ceremony at the Government headquarters in Hanoi on May 2, 2026, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung extended an official welcome to Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. This visit, scheduled from May 1 to May 3, follows an invitation from the Vietnamese leader.
Significantly, this is the first regional visit for Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae after his re-election in February 2026, signaling Japan's commitment to enhancing relations with Vietnam during this new chapter of shared growth.
The ceremony, marked by warmth and respect, featured children from Hanoi offering flowers, providing an uplifting start to the proceedings. The two leaders then proceeded to the honorary platform to commence the formal welcome.
As part of the ceremony, the national anthems were played by a military band, with both Prime Ministers saluting the national flag and reviewing the Honor Guard of the Vietnam People’s Army. This ceremonial aspect underscores the deep respect both nations have for their diplomatic engagement.
Following the ceremony, Le Minh Hung and Takaichi Sanae engaged in a private discussion, joined afterward by senior officials from both sides. High-level talks addressed past cooperation and outlined future collaborations in critical sectors.
Anticipated areas for expanded cooperation include trade, investment, technology, and sustainable energy. Topics such as green transformation, digital development, food security, and scientific collaboration were highlighted as foundational pillars for future progress.
Vietnam and Japan's relationship has matured over more than five decades, representing one of the most successful partnerships in the region, characterized by strong political trust and mutual respect. The enhancement to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023 has further solidified these bonds.
Economic collaboration continues to gain momentum, with bilateral trade reaching approximately 52 billion US dollars in 2025, reflecting an upward trend from the previous year. Japan remains one of Vietnam's leading investors, contributing through both direct investment and development assistance.
The Vietnamese diaspora in Japan, now exceeding 680,000 individuals, acts as a vital conduit for improving ties. This visit is anticipated to facilitate new opportunities and intensify cooperation, ultimately fostering peace, stability, and growth within the region.
