Kyrgyzstan is advancing its initiatives to secure substantial international investment in its water sector, following strategic discussions involving senior government officials and delegates from the World Bank and the International Development Association.
Erlist Akunbekov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, led dialogue focused on enhancing water management and expanding irrigation capabilities throughout the nation.
During these talks, attendees reviewed the National Irrigation Investment Program proposal, potentially bringing in almost 193 million US dollars to Kyrgyzstan. This venture aims to modernize irrigation techniques, enhance water resource management, and bolster food security on a national scale.
Officials indicated that this investment initiative would facilitate the modernization of outdated irrigation systems and promote agricultural productivity across various regions. Effective water management remains a major government priority given the rising agricultural and environmental issues.
Plans also encompassed the development of technical and design documentation for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in At-Bashy District and the Chon Talas Canal in Talas Region.
Authorities confirmed that a grant of 650 thousand US dollars would be allocated to assist with the preparation of these canal projects, accelerating the development and planning of forthcoming infrastructure enhancements.
At the end of the negotiations, Erlist Akunbekov and World Bank representatives formalized the agreements by signing official protocols that outline future steps for collaboration in the water sector.
Kyrgyzstan's collaboration with international financial institutions underscores a long-term strategy to fortify water security, modernize agricultural practices, and draw stable foreign investment into crucial infrastructure initiatives.
