Turkmenistan has reached a significant achievement in national infrastructure with the inauguration of the Ashgabat–Turkmenistan high-speed highway. The opening of the Mary–Turkmenistan section was celebrated with an event featuring President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who declared the entire project officially completed.
During his address, President Berdimuhamedov highlighted the importance of modernizing the nation's transportation infrastructure as a central element of the country's development agenda. He pointed out Turkmenistan's expanding role in transport diplomacy and aspirations to establish itself as a key regional transit hub.
This newly finalized highway stretches 600 kilometers, linking the capital Ashgabat to the eastern regions. Previously opened sections, including Ashgabat–Tedjen and Tedjen–Mary, were commissioned in phases.
The six-lane highway adheres to international standards of quality and safety, providing a direct route between the Akhal, Mary, and Lebap regions. This enhanced connectivity is set to significantly boost both mobility and regional integration.
Importantly, the project was executed entirely by local firms, with the construction managed by members from the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.
Officials have noted that this highway will curtail travel times for both passengers and freight, elevate logistics efficiency, and spur economic growth across various regions. Additionally, it is expected to bolster Turkmenistan's role as a strategic transport corridor linking different countries and continents.
This initiative is part of a wider vision to modernize the historic Silk Road, facilitating sustainable transport development and enhancing international links.
